Europe - Backpacking Adventure

Backpacking travel around Europe - it has been pending in our travel wish list for quite some time. In mid-2011, we finally fulfilled those "must-see" places in the world in a most memorable way!

Backpacking is one of the most exciting ways to travel and there is no place better than Europe for backpacking. Just two backpacks, no fixed itinerary or plan and we are ready to venture around Europe!

Backpacking not only allowed us the unlimited level of flexibility but also to experience and discover the new places in a sense of 'authenticity'. It was loosely planned trip, we did not have a fixed itinerary as such. We wanted to decide as we go and within three weeks we covered 17 European cities!

Alaska

Visiting Alaska is like visiting Mars. Expensive and only things I knew about Alaska is from watching National Geographic TV channel :)

Typically, things that come to our mind about Alaska are - melting glaciers, debates about global warming and free roaming bears...right?

Well, one has to really visit Alaska to appreciate the pristine beauty of this wonderland. If you can afford it, there are too many things to see and experience in Alaska. For us, we limited ourselves to Denali National Park and Seward area.

Mount Rushmore

In about two months we were relocating permanently back to India. So reminder of time we decided to finish off remaining travel destinations from our wish list. Obviously, one of pending place to visit is Mt Rushmore!

Mt Rushmore is a one of the iconic monument in United States. As part of this trip, we also visited nearby Jewel Cave monument, a bonus!

Just as much as Statue of Liberty in New York, Mt Rushmore is equally significant monument in United States. Colossal statues of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln were sculpted on mountain.

RV Trip

RV touring is a common leisure activity among middle-aged or retired folks in north america. I’m not yet middle-aged, but somehow I found RV touring/living very intriguing and I always wanted to experience the “RV". Remember the movie “RV” starring Robin Williams?
In a nutshell - RV (recreational vehicle) is a house on the wheels! It has kitchen, fridge, bedroom, toilet, shower all fitted inside the vehicle. Pretty cool!

I was all decided to go for RV trip, but not sure which place to visit. Yosemite (California) was the easy choice and my favourite place as well. But I've been there so many times and wanted to try a new place. Finally decided for Utah national parks - Zion, Bryce Canon, Arches, Canyonlands and Capital Reef, the ‘Mighty-5’ in one trip.

Redwood National Park

Redwood trees are gigantic trees. They grow as much as 370feet height!. As for comparison - some trees are twice as height of Statue of Liberty. They are not slender, they are huge... there are couple of drive-through trees in northern California where one can drive our own car through carved hole of tree trunk.

After visiting one such tree in Leggat (north California), I was even more anxious to visit Redwood national park where one could see hundreds of such trees. Purely Majestic!

Surprisingly, Redwood National Park is not so visited park as compared to other major national parks in California. This is added benefit, we get to walk around the forest trails without any annoyances of tourists or noise.

Grand Canyon

For a first time visitor, Grand Canyon is like alien land, just out of this world experience. It is iconic, a must see place in united states.

I've had several visit to Grand Canyon, it is always exhilarating experience for each visit!

Half Dome - Yosemite

Disneyland has official tagline of 'Happiest Place on Earth'. For me no place on earth more happier than 'Yosemite'. Sheer beauty of the valley and serene experience is unmatched.

I have visited Yosemite countless times and seen it in all seasons. I've seen it when it is crowed like flee market during summer as well during thick winter with absolute solitude. Every visit is refreshing. However, hike to top of Half Dome is memorable!
